Here is an interview we did with her earlier this year. Enjoy
I had the pleasure to interview Amerie, we spoke on her new upcoming album “In Love & War” in stores November 3rd & she event touched a bit on Broken Heel Moments of her own.
Let’s get into it !
BHD: Hi Amerie, how are you today? I am so excited to about the upcoming album and can’t wait to share with you The Broken Heel Diaries. “In Love & War” is your 4th studio album and your first album on Def Jam records. Welcome back !
Amerie: Thank you, I am glad to be back !
BHD: “Why R U?” Is the title of your first single on this album? The lyrics seem to depict a strong woman torn between her emotions of staying in a love relationship she knows has expired. How can you relate to this song?
Amerie: I really wanted to show in this song the different faces of people’s experiences. Most of the material on the album are things I have experienced in the past, things my friends have exprienced in the past. That’s why people will be able to relate to the overall content of this album. So many of my friends & I sit down and talk and go through the same issues. Less of a story and more of a moment, where you are at that particular time in your life. We all can relate to the material on the album. We’ve all been through it.
BHD: That sounds a bit like the definition of Broken Heel Diaries, topics that everyone can relate to because everyone goes through them. What is your broken heel moment that you have gone through lately, that you would like to share with us?
Amerie: That’s really cute ! The broken heel moment, that’s good terminology. I have had tons of them even before becoming an artist. Lemme think of one… I was recently on stage performing and there was a glass railing, I was trying to get over it while performing, as smoothly as I could. I wanted to get closer to my fans. It wasn’t as smooth & I felt like I was going to fall over while I was trying to jump over. That was a broken heel moment ! It was also very embarrassing for me.
BHD: Oh my… How did you overcome that broken heel moment ?
Amerie: I had to get over it and keep it moving !
BHD:That’s great advice in general. What advice do you have for women, when going through broken heel moments ?
Amerie: The true broken heel moments are less things that are petty and more like encountering a problem those are real broken heel moments. Try to take it as what can you learn from this, instead of dwelling on how it’s embarrassing or terrible. Just trying to learn from it. I think it’s about changing perspectives on how you see what’s happening to you and what’s happening around you, that will make you transfer everything.
BHD: My favorite song on the record is Pretty Brown feat. Trey Songz. It reminds me of the oldie by Mint Condition. Loved the collabo. Who else is featured on the album?
Amerie: Lil Wayne, Fabolous, Trey Songz
BHD: What is your favorite song on this record? and why?
Amerie: “Why R U?” and “Higher” both songs are songs that are special to me and are both very strong. I love all my records, otherwise I wouldn’t put them out. “Why R U?” was like “Why don’t we fall in love” it’s a strong comeback song for my fans and the dj’s. I really like “Higher” as well for the vocal delivery, it showcases my skills. These two songs are the essence of who I am. Neither took long to write. They are emotionally what I was feeling at the time I wrote them.
BHD: I think we should wrap it up now, I know you got tons of things to do and people to see. So last but not least. What is your favorite quote?
Amerie: A friend of mine named Bevy Smith has a quote that I love “What people think about me is none of my business” It’s a strong quote.
