I had to get this story off my chest, it’s actually a reoccurring story in my work place with one particular employee.  First, I have to state that she is a STELLAR employee, her work ethic is on par in so many ways. She always goes above and beyond. She is always organized. She has been waiting for several years to be promoted and doesn’t understand why she hasn’t been promoted.

We all see it, but she doesn’t. The thing is, it doesn’t matter how amazing you are no one likes a brown noser. What is a brown noser you ask? Here is what Webster’s online dictionary had to say about it.

Main Entry: brown·nose

Pronunciation: \ˈbrau̇(n)-ˌnōz\
Function: transitive verb
Etymology: from the implication that servility is equivalent to having one’s nose in the anus of the person from whom advancement is sought

Now that we are all on the same page with the definition, it is actually a bit sad to watch her go through these motions not having a clue of why she is being overlooked. It surely isn’t because she isn’t qualified for the job. I wish someone would tell her this, maybe she would stop thinking she wasn’t being promoted because she wasn’t qualified. That is false. Once before an interview at work, I tried to tell her to be herself. I dont’ think she understood where I was going with it so I let it slide. I really hope to see her succeed because she is great at what she does. However, being a brown noser is her down fall, NO ONE likes it. All of the higher ups know that she is this way, and who wants to work with someone who is willing to kiss your but, or be a yes man to get the job. At any given time, she will throw your name in the mud to an executive, thinking that’s what they want What she doesn’t notice is that it is only reflecting poorly on her showing that she doesn’t show any loyalty to her coworkers and team members.

The other day, I was late for work I had an offsite meeting and she sits a few offices away from me. I happened to take the back way to my office, which I don’t normally do. I was walking around the corner when the head of our HR department was speaking to her. They were just talking about random things, and she volunteered information, at no ones request. She says “Krissy isn’t even in and its 12pm can you believe that, she’s probably getting her hair done or something, she does that on work hours sometimes”. I came around just as she ended her sentence, I wasn’t upset because I knew that I was at a meeting. I also knew that this is part of her tactic striving to get promoted. I actually felt sorry for her.

Anyway, I just wanted to share with you that in my opinion in a business world, in a competitive field there is no room for brown nosers. You are better off stepping out on a limb and being yourself, standing up for what you believe in.

Do you have someone like this in your workplace? How do you deal with them? Have you told them about their behavior?
