This past weekend, I went for a bite with a friend of mine to catch up before she left on her trip. As we walk into the restaurant, the whole place was rented out by one family celebrating some occasion, not too sure. So, we had to eat on the patio. The food was delicious, it was a beautiful day outside. We admired the closeness of the family inside, everyone seemed so happy to be in each other’s precess. Next thing we know, an ambulance pulls up, two paramedic trucks. We look at each other confused, glance inside and notice that an older man from that party is laying on the floor getting his chest pumped. From a matter of seconds, the family went from celebrating to standing in shock, not sure what the outcome would be for their family member. Somehow though we noticed that thy seemed to have kept their composure. After what seemed to be 20 minutes, they were still pumping his chest. We then witnessed him passing away, there was nothing more they could do.
The rest of our meal was shared in silence, we were both speechless at what had just happened. That day we saw the value of life, right in front of us. We often speak about it but how many times do we actually get to see how fast things can change. We saw a family celebrate, happy, joyful and then sudden loss all within a matter of minutes. It is true indeed that you never know when your last day will be, and you should make the most of every day. We tried to make light of the situation and find a bit of comfort in knowing that he passed away surrounded by his loved ones. I am sure this is something we both will never forget.
