I did it. After years of wanting to jump out on my own and embrace my entrepreneurial spirit, I’ve finally done it. As scared as I am knowing I’m about to break out on my own, it’s this fear that motivates me and deep down I know it’s what I’m destined to do.

To note: I wouldn’t recommend everyone run out and offer their two weeks notice. I debated about this for a couple years. The pros and cons were listed, the opportunity was reviewed and the timing had to be there. The stars aligned and it happened.  I also found great information on Sprouter.com – this site offers advice and live conversation with notable entrepreneurs, to help newbies get useful information for their business ideas.

If this is something you’re considering you need to ask yourself a few questions:

  Are you passionate?

  • To work for yourself, you must be driven by the passion you have to push your limits.
  • ‘Does this idea excite me?’ ‘Am I willing to work on this for the next few years in order to get it off the ground?’

Can you adapt to situations on a whim?

  • When running a business you have to be able to handle challenges at any time.
  • Priorities can change at any moment and there will be times outside of 9 to 5 that you’ll be required to get the job done.

 Are you a leader?

  • As a self-employer you are the one calling the shots.
  • Do you have the ability to motivate others to buy your idea and be accountable for their responsibilities?

Do you have an ambition?

  • As an entrepreneur you have to realize that there may be times things are not running smoothly and people will have their doubts.
  • You must believe in your idea and know that when times are tough you will get through it.

Whether you succeed or not, be proud of yourself for embracing the unknown.  I know I am taking the plunge to follow my heart and this can never be defined as a failure.
