Music lovers slowly filed into The Garrison for the third Live Nation ‘The New Noise Live’ event. This time, The Mark Inside were the stars of the night, holding a record release party for their second LP “Nothing to Admit.” Although the night was dedicated to the Whitby, Ontario-bred four-piece, both opening acts were equally as amazing.

The Revolvers began the night, and despite missing their fourth member, the band played a psychedelic rock set that could be described as a mix of jazz with a plethora of new age synth, combined with smooth, harmonizing vocals. The guitarist/harmonica player even sported sunglasses for their performance, which he removed upon exiting the stage; proof that the guys were truly ‘feeling’ the music- as all bands on this night- by embodying a cool, jazzy persona.

Next, came Toronto pop-rock outfit The Ruby Spirit. Front woman Paige Boy pulled out their signature theatrical, energetic stage presence, while rocking a shiny ‘80s inspired one piece, and finishing the look with futuristic metallic boots. Watching The Ruby Spirit on stage, it’s obvious that the eclectic band know how to express the story and emotions behind their lyrics. It was as if Boy’s resonating voice and charisma transformed the dimly-lit bar into a Broadway show- just add a bass heavy soundtrack, replace the orchestral string instruments with an electric guitar and amplifier, and don’t forget a moshing audience.

Finally, the venue was full and it was time for the headliners. Mark Inside, played the track list off their 2011 album “Nothing to Admit,” along with some old favorites. Although front man Chris Levior was looking proper with a button-up, red tie and pull over sweater, he was far from reserved. The garage rockers, often dubbed “the Canadian Strokes”, played a loud, sweaty, electric guitar hammering set resulting in constant synchronized head banging among the crowd. Graciously returning for encore, they joked about playing Loutallica’s “Lulu” and insisted that the audience be patient. Mark Inside banged out a slew of encore songs, including one of their first underground hits “Carousel.”

The best part? Levior hopping off stage, guitar and mic stand in hand, to perform submerged in the crowd.
