I am truly blessed to be surrounded by some great men in my life and thought it was time I brought them to light and featured them on BHD.
I give you another one of my heroes and sources of inspiration: Derek (Drex) Jancar. We share the same birth month, so I often think we share the same Capricorn values.
I met Drex in 2004 at IC Visions while hosting a workshop for youth. Drex was working as a founder of the I.C. Visions photography and recording arts programs. Since then, I am proud to say that I have watched him grow into a leader and powerful voice within the youth-sector worldwide.
Not many people know this about Drex but he can also rock the mic while on the stage; truth be told, I actually first met him as a rapper. He’s put out a few projects, including the DNA EP (2002) and 3 LPs – Charlie Hustle (2004), The Rawluck Movement (2007) & City to City (2010) – not too shabby my friend!
Whether its rockin’ the mic or rockin’ a suit to solidify deals, he can definitely switch it up and display his versatility. One of the things I love most about him is, along with Gavin Sheppard and Kehinde Bah, he co-founded The Remix Project in 2006 and is now the Director of Resources. Among the many things he does, we’ve also crowned him the leader of the Make it Happen Gang aka making sure the lights are always on. His efforts have raised over $3 million dollars for the Remix Project.
Unfortunately for us, we now have to share Drex with Chicago, where he continues to work on his music and setting up a charity foundation of long-time friend Dave Bolland (of the NHL’s Chicago Blackhawks).He’s also been the lead on all their annual fundraisers: media and celebrity poker tournament – Stack Chips for Remix and the Dave Bolland Celebrity Golf Tournament; which, together, have allowed this award-winning charity to continue to operate with close to a $1 million dollar annual budget and be voted the Best Youth Agency in Toronto by Now Magazine for 2011.
