I caught up a few weeks ago with some friends of mine and a joke was made suggesting that I have a “little complex”. What’s a little complex you ask? I describe it as not being able to see the worth in your accomplishments. Thinking less of yourself. I got a real kick out of the joke, I laughed until I realized there was some truth in what was said. Why do I do that? Why do I downplay the hard work we do? Are we afraid of being overly confident so we retract into “little” mode. Is that a safer place to be?
There is a fine line between being proud of your accomplishments and bragging, that we know. In a time where most of our outcome is determined largely by being able to speak to our experiences, there is no time for “oh little me” syndrome. Something that helped me is putting together all of the projects I worked on, all the brands I collaborated with and keeping all the information filed in one place. I understand that sometimes we work so hard that we forget to look up and see what we’ve done. Whenever you feel the “Oh little Me” voice coming on, just pull out your past projects folder, or portfolio to remind yourself of the WHY you are capable of moving forward.
Whatever you do, don’t make it a habit, soon others will start to know it as the truth about you.
