My father used to wear some tight leather pants. I know this because at 17, I wore one of them (he had many) for my high-school fashion show. I believe I got heckled during the event, and I refrained from wearing anything other than jackets and shoes. As I started to find my identity in fashion, there were many celebrities whose fashion sense influenced mine: Mary J Blige in leather with a hip-hop twist and Aaliyah with her bad girl edge in leather coveralls. But I’m a country girl at heart, and seeing Sheryl Crow in her single for her 2002 video Steve McQueen, sporting all types of badass leather played an integral part on my leather sensibilities.

Leather will always be a sure thing on the runway. It’s also quite cute despite all the do’s and don’ts of the fashion world; leather is the one-thing women over 50 and beyond aren’t afraid to whip out. If it’s fun you’re after, you can work a leather playsuit as seen at Carmelo, or you can be crisp in an Elene Cassis leather skirt suit. A personal favourite are the boyish leather pants in L.A.M.B’s fall 2011 collection. Maude Garette was cute and casual in a pair of leather shorts with a military blazer, but Nicole Kidman, looking svelte after two children, rocked it in a L’Wren Scott dress with fur stole.

Plaid is woven for the rebellious warrior. In the late 1700s, the English army attempted to ban the pattern but its associated clan, the Scots, stood firm and wore their plaid proudly. Since then the rest of the world, particularly us Canadians, hold the print close to our hearts.

Christian Dior titillated with a pair of saccharine shorts. And Sonya Rykiel, the queen of warm hues was playful and soft. Jennifer Lopez, well past her 40s and mother of twins, gave her (much) younger counterparts a run for their money with a cropped plaid jacket, while Melora Hardin played it safe with plaid pants paired with lots of black.

But, of course, it was Chloë Sevigny the eternal fashion muse that gets the badge of honour for wearing a Louis Vuitton coat as a dress.

Late pass, my friend introduced me to Zappos last night where I found these babies… I love L.A.M.B shoes because they are so funky, and unlike any other shoe out there. These ones are called Zea and run for about $359 USD on Zappos.
